MAJOR AUSTRALIAN PROPERTY GROUP
This Client owns and operates over 110 shopping centres across Australia, with around 100 people at head office and 400 people at remote sites in the various centres. These remote sites have been established using the DyCom-installed Citrix system, resulting in considerable financial and IT management savings.THE CHALLENGE
Understandably, the client requires the most effective and high performing computer network, incorporating state-of-the-art technology.Downtime, computer failures, and poor performing links between head office and each shopping centre are expensive, disruptive and unacceptable. As a consequence, the client operates 30 file servers with an attached storage network.
THE DYCOM SOLUTION
For the past five years, DyCom has operated as a partner to the client’s IT Department, providing a range of skills and expertise that the client requires but does not have the time, desire or resources to instigate. The relationship between DyCom and the client is based on DyCom’s understanding of the client’s specific needs. To achieve its unparalleled level of service, DyCom employs a combination of unrivaled technical expertise, considerable technology awareness and well-established project management skills, guaranteeing the most effective network performance and ensuring continuous remote connectivity.
LARGE GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT
Over the past 15 years, DyCom has designed, implemented and maintained the sophisticated computer and wireless networks for over 60 schools.THE CHALLENGE
The Government Department’s requirements were simple enough: to contract an IT specialist who would integrate conventional and wireless technologies to design the most cost effective, easily maintainable networks for schools, without compromising on performance or reliability.THE DYCOM SOLUTION
The systems designed for the schools used a combination of technologies, specifically designed and integrated by DyCom from the most recognised IT brands. This resulted in each school making considerable savings, both initially and over the life of the network, while ensuring optimum performance.DyCom is proud of the fact that every one of the systems designed and maintained by DyCom is still operating effectively and efficiently at the school, and still delivering enviable performances for staff and students alike.
REGIONAL ACCOUNTING PRACTICE
The client is a country-based accounting and tax practice, comprising a head office with over ten remote sites in various country towns.THE CHALLENGE
The client needed an efficient computer network, linking all offices to both head office and to the Australian Tax Office. Total security needed to be ensured for every client, both from within the network and from external forces. The system has now been operating for many years, with total security and solid risk management procedures to protect each practice and their ever-growing database. A redundancy system has been implemented to protect against malfunction, which could be catastrophic for the business.
THE DYCOM SOLUTION
As a direct consequence of the DyCom-designed system and approach, the client saved a significant amount of money on its infra-structure, and also made major savings to the on-going and maintenance costs of the network.THE CLIENT – ARCITECTURAL PRACTICE
The client is a medium-sized architectural practice with around 8 users. Initially, DyCom designed a small Windows 2000 network for the firm; soon after, the firm won a major project, which created the need to employ another 20+ professional staff and commence this project within a very short time period.THE CHALLENGE
The DyCom challenge was twofold. First, there was a need to design a much larger network with extensive storage and back-up procedures in record speed. Secondly, this network needed to have its costs contained, because at the end of the project the firm would shrink back to around 8 staff, and there would no longer be a need for an expensive network.THE DYCOM SOLUTION
One of the skills that sets DyCom apart is understanding the specific and unique needs of each client, then, using its depth of technological knowledge, designing the most cost-effective system to meet that client’s needs. The system designed by DyCom for the client met all their requirements: a high performing solution with complete and secure back-up and storage facilities, which was still relatively inexpensive as it was designed to last for the duration of the project.
TRAINING CONSULTANCY PRACTICE
The client operates a training consultancy across various areas of industry. The client operated from an office where there were no data points present, but wanted an efficient network for more than ten users.THE CHALLENGE
The challenge facing DyCom was to design a cost-effective network in an area where there was part cabling but no data points.THE DYCOM SOLUTION
The solution was a network that combined conventional as well as wireless technologies. This network met the client’s requirements and expectations precisely. The real benefits manifested themselves some months later when the company moved premises, and simply shifted their entire wireless network into the new offices with no new cabling, no cost and no hassle.DyCom welcomes the opportunity to present a proposal to any prospective client. We will clearly demonstrate how to reduce both the upfront and on-going costs associated with your computer network while ensuring the highest level of performance and securitythroughout the life of that network.
Wireless Solutions Case Studies
MAJOR PUBLIC HOSPITAL
This is a valued DyCom client, with whom we have been associated for many years and completed many successful projects. The latest project comprised linking 3 hospitals with a 45Mb full duplex wireless solution using telco-carrier grade equipment, where the three sites were up to 8 kilometers apart.
THE CHALLENGE
As the client operates in the health industry, the critical factor was to ensure that the backhaul links operated with 100% up-time efficiency, which was achieved by DyCom due to the unique design, approach and a clear understanding of the client’s needs. This performance was superior to that previously experienced without wireless links.THE DYCOM SOLUTION
In terms of cost, the client made a once-off payment of around $50K for the project, which then meant they owned all of the equipment as well as the links. The immediate cash benefit was the reduction in line rental costs of around $20K per annum, which, over the minimum 10 year expected life, delivered a cash saving of around $150K+.DyCom also maintains these links on behalf of the client, who has never experienced any downtime or linkage problems.
PREMIER PRIVATE SCHOOL
This large private school is another valued DyCom client, with many projects successfully completed.THE CHALLENGE
The challenge for DyCom was how to link two colleges 18 kilometers apart wirelessly, where there existed no line of sight but a dense hill between the two campuses.DyCom is continually at the cutting edge of technology, investigating and investing in new technologies as soon as they become available. Considerable DyCom resources are devoted to testing these new technologies, as with every such new development, the risks increase dramatically.
THE DYCOM SOLUTION
DyCom had already undertaken considerable testing of the new technology, and was thereby able to achieve a non line of sight wireless linkage providing 10Mb.The result for the client was nothing short of spectacular, in that the performance of the wireless link, despite the distance, outperformed their previous Telstra link. The College eliminated the need to pay annual line fees or equipment rentals ever again, and the downtime has been minimal.
REGIONAL ACCOUNTING PRACTICE
This client comprises a regional accounting practice in two towns about 36 kilometers apart. The client had exhausted all avenues of securing a wireless link between these two offices when it was referred to DyCom by another satisfied customer.THE CHALLENGE
The challenge was to provide a fast and reliable wireless link over 36 kilometers, which would, at that time, have been the longest unlicensed wireless link in country Victoria.THE DYCOM SOLUTION
Using a combination of technologies, some of which were very new, and after as much testing as was reasonable, DyCom designed and installed the system which has worked relentlessly and reliably since installation.Suffice to say the client was ecstatic with their ability to secure DyCom’s services and the results thereof, and we have maintained a close working relationship with the client ever since.
HIGH BRAND-NAME FURNITURE MANUFACTURER
DyCom, in conjunction with Halo Wireless, has developed a fully Australian made wireless radio under the Halo brand.Halo is a unit that meets a specific need in the market, in that it provides both superior range and coverage compared to most similar products.
Halo is being exclusively marketed by DyCom in Victoria, and one such installation was at the client’s main warehouse in Tullamarine.
THE CHALLENGE
The challenge at this warehouse was demonstrated by the failure of successive wireless units to operate in this environment, which comprised a massive area under an aluminium roof and was fitted with a large amount of steel shelving, virtually in the form of a multi-level building, and had continual high traffic of trucks, forklifts, etc.The problem experienced by nearly every other wireless Access Point tried in this environment was that the presence of such high volumes of steel and other reflective surfaces meant that wireless signals were simply not working on a consistent basis, and when they did so work, the coverage was sub-standard.
THE DYCOM SOLUTION
Installing one Halo unit (versus between 10-15 conventional access points) resulted in a significant improvement in coverage (about two-thirds of the factory now receives uninterrupted signals) as well as range, in that the one Halo unit works despite the presence of steel. The cost of the single Halo unit was less than the costs associated with the previous access points, which failed to work in that environment in the first place.
